Commercial Insurance. Same brain, different door
Entities, boards, businesses. Covered without the yawn.
Management liability, cyber, property, and related commercial covers, with the same discretion (and wit) I bring to the household side.
Coverage Areas
Commercial lines, high level. Still interesting
I structure commercial programs that sit beside family wealth: family-office entities, holdings, businesses where principals need coordinated risk. Educational only below. Actual coverage depends on underwriting, forms, and jurisdiction.
Directors & Officers (D&O)
D&O addresses certain claims against directors and officers for alleged wrongful acts in their managerial role. For private companies, family-office boards, and closely held entities, structure and Side A/B/C matter as much as limit size.
- Private company and nonprofit D&O conversations
- Entity structure and insured-person definitions
- Coordination with indemnification and bylaws where relevant
- Renewal review as governance or ownership changes
Errors & Omissions (E&O)
Professional liability (E&O) responds to certain claims alleging negligent acts, errors, or omissions in professional services. Placement hangs on the profession, contracts, and claims history.
- Professional services liability for eligible occupations
- Services description and contractual risk transfer
- Limits and retentions tied to client and project exposure
- Claims-made nuance in plain language at placement
Cyber liability
Cyber typically covers first-party costs (incident response, business interruption, certain recovery) and third-party liability from breaches or network failures, subject to policy terms. Underwriters care about controls, not just revenue.
- First-party and third-party cyber discussions
- Alignment with security posture and vendors
- Social engineering and funds-transfer exposures
- Privacy and breach-notification realities
Employment Practices Liability (EPL)
EPL addresses certain employee or applicant claims (discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination), subject to form and exclusions. Growing headcount and multi-state employment change the picture fast.
- EPL for private employers and family-related enterprises
- Workforce size and jurisdiction mix
- Coordination with D&O when packaged as management liability
- Renewal attention when HR policies or locations change
Commercial property & CRE
Buildings, business personal property, and (where purchased) business income. For investors and family holdings, ownership entities, mortgagees, and catastrophe exposures drive the structure.
- Building and business personal property placements
- CRE portfolios and single-asset entities
- Business income and extra expense where appropriate
- CAT exposure, valuations, and lender requirements
E&S and Lloyd’s for tough exposures
I use excess & surplus (E&S) markets and Lloyd’s syndicates for really tough risks and select out-of-country exposures (Mexico, the Caribbean, and beyond). Subject to surplus-lines rules, licensing, appointments, appetite, and underwriting. Selective. Not every country, not every risk.
- E&S when admitted capacity is a poor fit
- Lloyd’s for select complex or out-of-country exposures (e.g. Mexico, the Caribbean, and beyond)
- Always subject to surplus-lines rules, licensing, appointments, appetite, and underwriting. Not a claim of worldwide coverage
Workers’ compensation
Workers’ comp is statutory and often required when you have employees. Rules vary by state. Placement and experience rating follow jurisdictional rules. I discuss obligations with counsel/HR as needed. I don’t give legal advice.
- Statutory workers’ compensation for eligible employers
- Multi-state considerations when operations cross borders
- Class-code and payroll accuracy at submission and audit
- Coordination with risk-control and return-to-work practices
Management liability (coordinated)
Many private entities benefit from coordinated management liability (D&O, EPL, fiduciary, sometimes crime) as a package or thoughtful stack. High-level and accurate: forms differ. “Management liability” is a category, not one policy.
- Combined or concurrent management liability structures
- ERISA / employee-benefit fiduciary liability where benefit plans create that exposure, for the plan sponsor, not a substitute for plan counsel
- Crime / employee dishonesty when warranted
- Clear documentation of what is, and isn’t, covered
For Principals & Family Offices
Commercial risk next to personal wealth. Synced
Operating companies, holdings, family-office entities often sit next to the household program. I keep those worlds coordinated, without mixing them up.
-
Entity awareness
Named insureds, additional insureds, ownership structures. Reviewed before submission.
-
Advisor coordination
Updates wealth managers, counsel, and family-office teams can actually use.
-
No online bind
Commercial for this clientele is consulted and underwritten, not clicked into existence.
Got an entity that needs a sharper look?
Book a quiet chat about the entity, industry, and concerns: D&O, cyber, property, or a broader management liability review. Consultation only, not a binder.
